Leadership for institutions. Sovereignty for citizens.
The National Leadership Institute develops leaders, strengthens governance, and advances the ideas required to preserve individual liberty, human dignity, and human sovereignty in an age of powerful institutions and rapidly advancing technology.
A broader mission for a changing age
Founded in 2005, the National Leadership Institute has spent two decades focused on leadership and governance: how boards function, how institutions are led, how strategy is created, and what those entrusted with authority owe to the people and organizations they serve.
That work continues. But the environment in which leadership now operates is changing rapidly. Artificial intelligence, automation, concentrated institutional power, new forms of economic abundance, and growing dependence on large public and private systems are raising questions that reach far beyond the boardroom.
NLI is widening its work to address those questions. The central concern is simple: how do human beings remain self-governing when technology becomes extraordinarily capable and institutions become extraordinarily powerful?
What NLI now works on
Leadership & Governance
NLI's continuing work with nonprofit boards, directors, executives, and institutional leaders. Strong organizations require more than good intentions; they require capable leadership, sound governance, disciplined strategy, and accountability.
- Board roles, responsibilities, and fiduciary leadership
- Strategy, mission, vision, and institutional direction
- Board effectiveness and evaluation
- Financial oversight and audit committee practice
- Leadership development and succession
- Technology as both strategic asset and strategic risk
Liberty & Human Sovereignty
NLI's expanded work examines the conditions under which citizens remain genuinely self-governing as technology changes work, wealth, information, and the reach of institutions.
- The American Premise that rights precede government
- Human dignity as the foundation of individual rights
- Human sovereignty in an age of capable machines
- Ownership, agency, and the distinction between receiving and owning
- The relationship among technology, economic power, and civic independence
- Institutional design that disperses rather than concentrates control
Research, publishing & public education
National Leadership Institute Press
NLI Press publishes books, essays, and other work that advance serious discussion of leadership, governance, liberty, technology, citizenship, and the future of human agency.
Current publication: Citizens or Subjects? by Gerald M. Czarnecki examines the collision of technology-driven abundance and the civic schism, and the consequences for human sovereignty and the American Republic.
On Liberty
On Liberty will be NLI's continuing short-form publication: concise essays connecting enduring questions of liberty and human sovereignty to current developments in technology, economics, governance, and civic life.
The purpose is not simply to comment on the news, but to ask what each development means for the capacity of individuals to remain owners of their lives rather than clients of powerful systems.
Questions NLI intends to pursue
The Institute's expanded mission is organized around questions that will matter increasingly as technology and institutional power evolve:
- What happens to citizenship when human labor is no longer the principal source of economic claim?
- How should ownership be structured when machines and capital produce a growing share of abundance?
- What limits should constrain institutions that can observe, predict, and influence individual behavior at scale?
- How can boards and leaders adopt powerful technology without surrendering human judgment and accountability?
- Which institutions should be decentralized, disaggregated, or redesigned to preserve meaningful individual agency?
- How do free citizens organize constructively without reproducing the concentrations of power they oppose?
Ideas into action
NLI's work is intended to move from analysis to education, discussion, and practical institutional design. Future initiatives may include forums, research projects, leadership programs, civic education, and networks of people working on specific problems where technology, authority, ownership, and liberty intersect.
An evolving institution
This site is an interim introduction to the Institute's expanded mission. NLI is rebuilding its programs and digital presence around this broader agenda while retaining its longstanding commitment to practical leadership and governance.
